About the Peruvian Horse

The cadillac of the horses

The Peruvian Paso is a naturally gaited horse from Peru, celebrated for its exceptionally smooth ride and elegant, refined appearance.  Developed from Iberian ancestors over centuries of selective breeding, this breed is prized for its docile temperament, often described as having brío (controlled spirit), and its ability to cover long distances with minimal fatigue for both horse and rider.

The breed’s signature movement is the Paso Llano, a natural, four-beat lateral gait that eliminates the vertical bounce of a trot.  This gait is characterized by an even, rhythmic timing similar to a metronome, providing a glide-like sensation. A distinctive hallmark of the Peruvian Paso is termino, a unique outward rolling motion of the front legs that originates in the shoulder, adding grace and shock absorption to their stride.

In addition to the standard Paso Llano, these horses can perform the Sobreandando, a faster, slightly uneven four-beat gait used for greater speed.  Unlike many other gaited breeds, the Peruvian Paso’s gait is entirely genetic and natural, requiring no artificial devices or special training aids, and is transmitted to 100% of purebred offspring

Why the smooth gait matters for your back

Unlike the bouncing, two-beat trot that compresses the spine with each vertical jolt, the Peruvian Paso’s four-beat lateral gait keeps the rider’s pelvis in a gentle, continuous swaying motion — closer to the rhythm of human walking. This means far less concussive force on the intervertebral discs and lumbar vertebrae.

The low-impact advantage

Because the paso’s gait eliminates the vertical bounce, the spine experiences lateral and rotational forces rather than repetitive vertical compression. This makes it a far more forgiving workout for the back than high-impact activities like running or even a standard trot. The result is a riding experience that builds core strength and spinal stability without punishing the joints — a rare combination that makes the Peruvian Paso one of the most therapeutic mounts available.
